Every father is handed the same three-part assignment — to provide, to protect, and to point his children toward God — and no man carries it perfectly. This Father's Day we discover that the assignment was never meant to rest on us alone: it points past every earthly dad to a Heavenly Father who provides what we can't, guards what we can't reach, and runs down the road to meet us. On our best day we echo Him; on our worst day we're covered by Him.

You keep waiting to be qualified — more training, more confidence, more time. But when God meets Moses at the burning bush, He doesn't hand him something new; He asks one disarming question: “What is that in your hand?” This week in Exodus 4 we discover that the ordinary thing you've been holding all along — the job, the table, the story you're almost embarrassed by — is the very thing God is sending you with. Stop waiting to feel ready. The staff is enough.

For five weeks in Romans 8 we settled who you are — loved, free, more than a conqueror. Now the question turns: what are you for? We open the new series, Your Assignment, with a man everybody thinks they know. Strip the flannelgraph off Zacchaeus and you find a sellout — the most hated man in Jericho — so hungry for something his money never bought that he climbed a tree like a child. And Jesus stopped under that tree, called him by name, and invited Himself to dinner before Zacchaeus repented of a single thing. The invitation always comes before the cleanup. Jesus didn't come to the tree to visit Zacchaeus; He came to send him — because the moment you're found is the moment you're commissioned. You were not rescued to sit. You were rescued and given an assignment.

Most of us carry a sentence we can never quite finish — "but what about..." — and we fill in the blank with whatever we fear most at two in the morning. In the closing words of Romans 8, Paul refuses to let that sentence stand: the court is closed, the verdict is in, and Jesus Himself is interceding for you right now. If God is for you, the love that has you cannot lose you — and the only question left is what to do with the rest of your life.

Same morning. Same beach. Same fire. After the net filled, Jesus didn't skip past Peter's failure — He went back to it. On purpose. He built a charcoal fire on the shore, the same kind of fire Peter stood at when he denied Him three times, and He asked one question: "Simon, son of Jonah — do you love Me?"

Three times. Same number as the denials. Not asking about performance. Not asking for promises. Just: do you love Me? And when Peter said yes, Jesus gave him his purpose back — and then told him the very thing he had spent his whole life running from was coming for him anyway. Not as punishment. As "doxazo" — to make the glory of God visible.

Everything Peter feared became everything that made his life count.
